Poll taxes come to Texas?
My State Rep, Tan Parker of Texas' 63rd representative district, has just made local Democratic precinct chairman Steve Southwell's "shit list".
Parker is the co-author of House Bill 626 which, from what I understand, will force voters to file their birth certificates with their county's elections administration. And if they do not have their certificates, the county will sell them a reprint for $23.
Naturalized citizens must have citizenship papers - $200 - or an unexpired passport - $103.
Again, this is just what I've read so far. I'll be writing about this to some extent, I believe. More research must be done. Its critics call it a poll tax, but its defenders say it will prevent voter fraud. However the bill's principal author, Representative Phil King, claims in the legislation analysis, "there is no evidence of extensive voter fraud in Texas elections".
Why that disconnect exists, I'm not sure.
I would like to have a chat with Mr. Parker. I just do not understand this.
